Strategies for Promoting Breastfeeding Among Nursing Staff in the Neonatal Unit of a Public Hospital in Chiclayo, Peru

Abstract
Objective: To describe, analyze, and understand the strategies regarding breastfeeding promotion in nurses from the neonatal service of a public hospital in Chiclayo- Perú. Method: Qualitative, exploratory research, carried out on a population of 22 nursing professionals from the Neonatal area of Las Mercedes Hospital, in a sample of 13 participants, determined by data saturation and redundancy, information collection was given through a semi-structured interview and processed through thematic content analysis. Main results: Two categories were obtained: contents addressed by the nurse in promoting breastfeeding and strategies in promoting breastfeeding. General conclusion: The promotion of breastfeeding is a fundamental task of the nursing professional, who, based on current regulations, ensure the timely and continuous initiation of breastfeeding. Maternal education on hygiene, composition, benefits and advantages, positions, breastfeeding techniques and breast milk extraction, as well as risks of using commercial infant formulas, are the topics addressed to strengthen this practice and although barriers to its promotion persist, such as those of the mother, the infant and the nursing professional herself, open-door policies, individualized counseling and coordination between services emerged as essential strategies to guarantee the initiation and continuity of breastfeeding.
